A Celtic fan who threw a bottle of juice at opposition supporters during a game has been fined more than £500.

Calum Maclean was in attendance at a match between Celtic FC and Hearts of Midlothian at Celtic Park on December 16, 2023.

The 27-year-old was in the home section in the East Stand when he launched a bottle of juice at the away section at around 3.15pm.

It landed between Hearts fans squirting juice. There were no injuries.

The incident was captured on one of the stadium’s panoramic cameras and Maclean was identified.

Police were called by security staff. Officers attended and Maclean was removed from the stadium.

It was then confirmed that he was the male observed on CCTV taunting away fans. He was charged.

Maclean, of Oban, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week after pleading guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by gesticulating at opposition supporters and throwing a container of liquid into a crowd.

His lawyer told the court that he acted foolishly and regrets throwing the bottle of juice. She added that it had come as a wake-up call for her client who works as a self-employed joiner.

The defence solicitor said: “He has found stability in his employment and is motivated to do the best with his employment.

“Focusing on his own business has encouraged him to mature. He accepts that his actions on this day were entirely unacceptable.

“He has not been to any games since. He recognises the disturbance this behaviour could have caused in a large group of people.”

The Crown asked the court to fix a football banning order.

Maclean’s lawyer stated that her client had not been in trouble whilst attending football matches before and invited the court not to impose this ban.

She said: “I appreciate what my friend [the procurator fiscal] is saying. Disorder may have arisen however in this circumstance it did not.

“His actions were foolish, he recognises how serious his actions were as he finds himself in court.

"He is a follower of football. He does not have a season ticket and is not at matches every week however he has been attending football matches for a long period of time.

“He can demonstrate that he is responsible. He is now fully aware of the consequences such foolish behaviour can have.

“He is focusing on building his business.”

Sheriff Simone Sweeney imposed a financial penalty of £540 and refused the Crown’s motion to fix a football banning order.

Addressing Maclean, Sheriff Sweeney said: “This was reckless behaviour on your part.”
