Celtic diehard Alan Brazil is worried about the referee playing a part in the outcome of Sunday's Old Firm clash with Rangers - and he knows he's not alone.

John Beaton has been handed the top officiating role for this one, with his appointment heavily scrutinised by both sets of supporters.

Beaton has been in the spotlight over recent weeks after Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was banned from the touchline for criticising his performance as VAR following a 2-0 defeat against Heart of Midlothian last month.

There's a lot at stake this weekend when the Glasgow rivals meet in Govan and after Rangers legend Ally McCoist predicted his former club to triumph 2-1 winners, Celtic fan and broadcaster, Brazil, was asked how he sees the match panning out.

"It depends who the ref is," the breakfast show host quipped.

Wales legend Dean Saunders accompanied Brazil for Friday mornings edition and was keen for the 13-time capped Scotland international to elaborate.

He replied: "What are you suggesting there? The refs cheating?"

Before Brazil answered with: "Listen, I'm not alone in thinking that. I'm not alone.

"Okay, it doesn't really matter to be honest. I just want a fair ref."

McCoist remained on the phone line and couldn't help but bite back at his radio colleague by giving an example of a game-defining refereeing decision going against Rangers.

Light Blues striker Kemar Roofe had a goal chalked off during a 1-0 home defeat versus Celtic on September 3. Cyriel Dessers had outmuscled Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke and teed up Roofe to score. On-field ref Don Robertson had initially gave the goal before overturning his own decision after being sent to check the VAR monitor.

Many experts and pundits claimed the outcome was wrong that day and McCoist clearly hasn't let that go either.

He stated: "Deano, what he's forgetting is Rangers got a goal disallowed in the corresponding fixture this season, when (Kemar) Roofe scored, for absolutely nothing."

Saunders appeared perplexed at the intense scrutiny Beaton and his fellow whistlers go under and ended the discussion suggesting nobody would want to referee an Old Firm game.

"Why would you want to ref this game by the way?," he suggested. "You wouldn't want to be the ref of this game because you're going to get the blame no matter what."
