Mikey Johnston has pinpointed a lack of continuity and trust as reasons why things haven't worked out how he would've liked at Celtic so far.

Johnston, 24, was tipped for big things when coming through the Hoops' ranks but after struggling to feature regularly in Brendan Rodgers' plans during the first half of the season, the winger was shipped out on loan to West Brom in the January transfer window.

Since joining the English Championship side, Johnston has flourished. He has netted six goals from 10 appearances and provided a further assist to help the Baggies jump into fifth place in the league table.

The Celtic youth graduate understands the ruthlessness of modern day football and that he needs to continue his current form to remain a first pick.

And he believes being given regular games in his natural position has been a huge help in bringing out his best form - something he failed to do frequently enough in Glasgow.

He said: "It's the same situation there but in a different place, and luckily in a different way for me. It feels more like it's my position to lose here and I just need to keep performing every week but it's always good to have competition for places.

"We've got guys with quality coming back, experienced lads too like Matty Phillips and we'll need to lean on lads like that towards the end of the season.

"It just feels like I needed a run of games to play in my position and have some trust from my teammates and the manager. I've had that while I've been here and it's what's helped me kick on.

"Earlier in my career I had a lot of injuries, was in and out and was always trying to establish myself. I'd maybe start one week, then not the next and it's always hard when you're consistently not playing. That's what I've need and that's what I've been getting at Albion."

While discussing how his contribution has helped West Brom's chances of reaching the much-coveted play-offs, Johnston added: "When you're in the flow, your confidence just comes out in your play and that's where I want to continue being.

"I've always had the trust in my ability but a lot of the time my body was breaking down, I wasn't ready, strong, but I feel like I've got into a great rhythm now where I trust everything. Trust myself, my body, ability, fitness, tactical knowledge, so everything's falling into place and it's the right time to have come to a place like Albion."
