MARK WARBURTON has competition for places right across his squad now but it is in midfield where he has the most options and some difficult calls to make.
We know that Joey Barton and Niko Kranjcar have real quality, so if they play then who partners them? Andy Halliday and Jason Holt both did really well last season and they won’t want to see their places taken by new arrivals this season.
I have been impressed by what I have seen of Jordan Rossiter so far and he will be hoping for another start this weekend. For a kid of 19, he reads the game well, he is always involved in the play, he likes a pass and he likes a tackle.
He is a player who is really highly rated, he captained England at the Under-19 European Championships this summer and he has made the most of his chances to impress for Rangers so far this season. I think Jordan will have a big part to play, but he is not the only one.
Mark will only play three midfielders but he has got a lot to choose from. That will increase when Josh Windass and Matt Crooks are back from their injuries as well.
It is about getting the right balance in the side. You need someone that can tackle, someone that can pass the ball and someone to hold and sit a bit deeper.
There are a couple of players for each category there and I don’t think anyone can say for definite what the strongest combination is. It will probably be horses for courses throughout the season.
You do need a bit of pace and that was shown in the Hamilton game. They had an energetic midfield, they had good legs and there were several times when they just ran away from the Rangers midfielders.
We have certainly got the players there but what the best three is right now, I don’t know.
If you are picked to start in whatever game and you don’t play well then you can’t expect to start the next game because there are players there waiting to come in.
