DAVID WEIR admits there is ‘a chance’ that trialist Oguchi Onyewu will win a deal with Rangers as he keeps his options open this summer.
The defender joined the Light Blues at their training camp in Charleston last Monday as he was given a chance to impress and has spent recent days trying to prove his worth.
Boss Mark Warburton has added Clint Hill and Lee Hodson to his defensive ranks already ahead of the new campaign but is in the market for another centre-back option.
Onyewu has was last on the books of Charlton but was a key player for the United States earlier in his career and assistant manager Weir is pleased with his Gers impact so far.
He said: “He has done well. It’s difficult for him to come into a group he doesn’t know and make a mark or impression.
“We all know he is an experienced player. We’re having a look at him and he’s having a look at us.
“It’s a difficult situation but he has handled it really well and he has socialised really well.
“I think there is a chance he will win a contract. We wouldn’t have invited him here if we didn’t think he had a chance.
“We’ve got until the end of the week to make our minds up. We’ll give him our thought and he will give us his thoughts and we will see where we are at. The decision has to be right for all parties.
“Since he left Charlton he has been training with DC United for a period of time.
“He just wants to know what his next challenge is. He still wants to play and he wants to contribute. He wants a challenge that excites him.
“He has options in the USA and he wants to have options in Europe too.”

It has been a productive transfer window for Rangers so far as eight arrivals have added strength and depth to the Ibrox ranks ahead of the big kick-off.
A defender and a striker are top of Warburton’s shopping list as the countdown continues to the Betfred Cup ties and Premiership opener against Hamilton Accies.
But Weir insists the Light Blues won’t add another stopper just for the sake of it as the final touches are added to the Ibrox squad.
He said: “If we don’t sign him it doesn’t mean we need to find another centre back because we have Clint and Matt Crooks can play there.
“However, Frank McParland is always very good at giving us names and options when situations develop.
“We are always trying to improve but we don’t want too many players as Mark has said before.
“We want a competitive squad and we want everyone to be pushed but if someone becomes available and we feel it will enhance the squad and it’s in our budget then we will do it.”
