ANDY HALLIDAY has 2020 vision after signing a new four-year deal with Rangers. And the midfielder has his sights firmly set on a Premiership title and European return at Ibrox.

Halliday realised his boyhood dream when he joined the Gers in the summer as he became one of a host of signings by boss Mark Warburton ahead of his first campaign in charge.

The 24-year-old has now been rewarded for his fine form with another Ibrox deal to ensure he will spend the next four years pulling on the famous blue shirt.

If all goes to plan, he will be doing so in Scotland’s top flight next season. The Championship title is Rangers’ main aim this term, but that is far from the top of their to-do list in the long run.

Halliday is well aware of the expectations of playing for Rangers and the demands from the stands. It is a case of so far, so good for Warburton’s side as they have thrived under the pressure.

Nobody at Ibrox will get ahead of themselves and start taking things for granted when there is still plenty of work to be done. But Halliday knows the Gers have to aim high in the years to come.

“The most important thing for the club is to be back in the SPL next year,” he said.

“I would like to think that over the next four years we would be back in Europe and challenging for titles because at the end of the day those are the demands at this football club.

“You will never settle for second. We have got to strive to win an SPL title in the next four years and be back in Europe.

“I have seen some words from some ex-pros. I saw Brian Laudrup say during the week that he feels if Rangers win the Scottish Cup this year it betters their nine-in-a-row. I don’t think that’s quite true!

“But it does show the scale of the job we have at hand this year because it was a complete overhaul, a new coaching staff, a new playing squad.

“Obviously there is the new philosophy, how we are trying to play football, as well. It is something that we always knew, especially having such a young squad, that was going to take time.

“We probably hit the ground running quicker than what most people expected and then obviously we had a little bit of a lull during the season which obviously we have rectified over the last few weeks.

“We have got our own aims, but the main thing is to back in the Premiership next season.

“But at the end of the day we are still in the Scottish Cup and we have got to go and try and win that as well.”

If Rangers can go on and win the second tier title this term, it will be a moment to celebrate but hardly one to savour. It will mark another point on their journey, but not signal that they have reached their final destination.

The side that can clinch Rangers’ 55th top flight title will have a unique place in the club’s illustrious history and the hearts of the supporters who await the ultimate high after some significant lows.

Halliday said: “I think it means a lot to the fans because of the journey they’ve been on over the last few years.

“I know certain Rangers fans that I’m friends with who try to look at the positives.

“They’d never seen Rangers play at Annan, they’d never seen Rangers play in Berwick and places like that – so they wanted to tick them off their list.

“But let’s be honest, they’ll be getting bored with this after four or five years of it.

“We just want to get back where we belong – and that first Premiership title we win is going to be all the sweeter.

“But there are some very good teams in the top flight, teams we need to overcome.

“We are on our own little journey at the moment and hopefully we continue to get better and better. But I see a lot of potential in that squad.

“I might be wrong but I think it’s the youngest squad in Scotland. For the next four-and-a-half years, I’ll enjoy seeing everyone around me getting better and better.”

Halliday will look to celebrate his new Ibrox deal by seeing off Livingston this afternoon and by helping Warburton’s side move six points clear at the top of the table.

After a poor run that saw their lead whittled down, Rangers have netted 15 goals in their last three games as they have got their campaign back on track.

Second-placed Falkirk host Hibernian tomorrow but Halliday’s only focus is on Warburton’s side as they bid for another Championship triumph.

He said: “Neither of them have been dropping many points – but at least one of them has to drop something this weekend.

“Hopefully, if we do our job on Saturday, that will create a bit of an extra gap between us.

“But I can’t give enough credit to both teams. They’ve both won a lot of games this year.

“Falkirk beat us a couple of weeks ago, they’re obviously going to be tough. Hopefully we keep picking up points ourselves and look for a slip from them somewhere.

“I didn’t even know it was Sunday that they’re playing – so that shows you how much attention I’ve paid to it!

“One of them is going to drop points, so we’ll see who it is on Sunday.”
