LEE WALLACE is confident Rangers have put a ‘freak’ result against St Johnstone behind them as they look to extend their lead at the top of the Championship standings.

Mark Warburton’s side suffered their only defeat of the campaign so far last week as they crashed out of the League Cup at Ibrox.

But they bounced back at the first attempt with a 4-0 win over Morton on Sunday as they turned in another impressive performance.

The visit of second-placed Falkirk is next on the Gers’ agenda this weekend and skipper Wallace is determined there will not be another slip.

He said: “It was all about the reaction. It was more a case of us getting back to what we do best.

“It was a freak result, the way we look at it. It is one we analysed the day after and we quickly learned from.

“That is the difference now, we are looking to try and dissect these instances and it is a new experience for the squad, and a young squad that are having to deal with defeat, deal with criticism, and disrespect.

“We done that on Sunday. We out there and we got back to what we do best and that is playing our way, to our standards and at our tempo.

“We knew they would try and slow the game down at every opportunity so it was about us maintaining standards and it was good to go and score four goals and keep a clean sheet.”

Boss Warburton had two familiar faces to thank at Cappielow as Martyn Waghorn hit a hat-trick and James Tavernier scored his eighth goal of the campaign to clinch the points.

The pair have made a superb start to life at Ibrox following their summer switches from Wigan Athletic.

And Wallace reckons the mentality of Warburton’s new look squad will stand Rangers in good stead as they set their sights on the Championship crown this term.

“Both lads are never happy in terms of where they are, they are always wanting to be better, whether that is on the training ground or in the gym, or on a match day,” he told RangersTV.

“It is great. It is an infectious way that they have got.

“The lads that have come on board have settled in really well and their work ethic is tremendous and they have been tremendous out there on the pitch.

“Again, [it is about] maintaining those standards, never standing still, always wanting to do better. I think that is the right way for us to go.

“We are a young squad, we are always learning from a top manager and top coach and top assistant in Davie Weir. We are always learning and we are just going to keep improving and doing well.”
