FOR an 11-year-old Jack Leitch, Keith Lasley was the man brought in to Motherwell to replace his retiring dad.

But nine years on after the central midfield took over the steely role at the heart of the Well midfield from his old man Scott, Leitch Jnr is proud to class the veteran professional as a friend, team-mate and inspirational captain.

Brought up with Motherwell in his blood, the young midfielder was always in awe of Lasley and his presence around Fir Park.

To a young kid making his way in the game in the club's community scheme, he was someone to look up to and seek inspiration from in his approach to his profession.

Now just a day before Lasley’s contribution at Motherwell is recognised with a testimonial against Bolton Wanderers, Leitch turns the clock back to talk about the man that would go on to lead the Steelmen into the Champions League qualifiers.

He said: “I still remember watching Keith play when I was a little boy.

“The first time I probably met him when I was in one of kids community teams and the players would come and visit you. Stephen Pearson, James McFadden and Stevie Hammell used to do it and you’d get your picture taken with them.”

“He was a great player back then as well and it’s an honour now to be playing beside him.

“I don’t want him up about how long he’s been playing! It’s a credit to Keith that he has had so many games for the club and has played for as long as he has.

“He is just as good now if not better than he was back then. You have to admire that, it’s because he has kept his fitness levels up.”

Naturally, Leitch doesn’t have to look much further than his dad for an idol in the game given he is still involved with the club he racked up over 100 appearances for.

But the 20-year-old from Motherwell believes on the park he couldn’t ask for a better team-mate to help him through the fledgling stages of his first-team career.

“He is brilliant to play around, encourages you and has experience you need,” said Leitch.

“He is very encouraging but if you’re not performing he’ll tell you! Keith is demanding but he is always positive.

“You look up to Keith in the dressing room. If you have a problem you go to him and he will listen and help you.”

While Lasley’s playing career doesn’t show any signs of stopping soon, Leitch has seen with his own eyes the promise the 35-year-old has already shown in the early stages of his coaching career.

He added: “My little brother Robbie was playing with the Under-17s last year and he’s now full-time. Las and Mick [Stephen McManus] took the team last year and are doing it again this season.

“You can already tell he’s going to be a good manager.”

Keith Lasley’s testimonial against Bolton Wanderers will take place at Fir Park tomorrow at 3pm. Entry is priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.
