A section of a busy road will be affected by multiple closures for several weeks.

Work is continuing on the A72 near the M74 junction 7 (Larkhall) to improve the road.

As a result there will be different closures implemented in five phases over the coming weeks.

The first of these will mean the full closure of Duke Street from Monday, May 13 until Friday, May 17 meaning there will be no access onto and from the A72.

The second phase will see off-peak traffic signals in operation from Friday, May 24 until Wednesday, May 29.

Next, there will be overnight closures on the A72 between the M74 off-ramp and Duke Street on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31.

Finally, there will be an overnight closure of the M74 off-ramp on Wednesday, June 5, and overnight closures of the off-ramp on Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7.

Head of roads, fleet and transportation services, Colin Park, said: “These closures are necessary to allow us to safely complete the resurfacing elements that are required for this project.

“Please note that all these closures are subject to alteration and formal closure notices will be issued, and appropriate advance signing will be in place on site to advise drivers.

“All closures will have signed diversion routes in place for their duration.

“We fully appreciate the inconvenience and frustration road closures can cause, and we thank motorists, residents and businesses in advance for their patience and cooperation. As ever we would ask motorists in the area to plan ahead and build in additional journey time.”
