A CITY football team is one step closer to a new pitch and floodlights after receiving a £100,000 funding boost.

Glasgow Girls and Women FC received the cash from sportscotland’s Sport Facilities Fund.

The club's new 3G pitch and floodlights is among 18 projects across Scotland to share a total of £1,506,263 from the national sports agency's fund.

Based at Budhill Park in Springboig in Glasgow's East End, the fund will help the club to extend football opportunities for its members and enable wider community use.

David McDermott, development manager for Glasgow Girls and Women FC, said: "The award from sportscotland's facilities fund will support us to install a new 3G pitch and floodlights at our existing facilities at Budhill Park.

"This development will enable our existing football teams to train and play football matches at the same location and will foster a greater feeling of togetherness amongst our club members.

“It will also enable greater numbers of young females across our community to fully engage in football-focused activities and derive significant benefits from participation in our great sport."

The club's training and matches are currently scheduled at the Glasgow Green Football Centre and the Shettleston Football Centre, subject to availability.

Forbes Dunlop, chief executive of sportscotland, said: "The aim of the Sports Facilities Fund is to support sustainable and inclusive projects with their ambitions of using sport and physical activity to enhance the lives of their local communities.

"This investment would not be possible without National Lottery players who continue to raise vital funding for sport across Scotland.

“The physical and mental health benefits of sport are well documented, but equally important is the ability to create a space where everyone is welcome to participate at their own level.

“Projects like Glasgow Girls and Women FC’s new pitch not only create opportunities for people to take part in sport and physical activity but can also provide a place for communities to come together.”

The Sport Facilities Fund prioritises projects that increase participation and facilitate progression in sport by removing barriers.
