THE construction of almost 120 new homes on vacant land in Renfrew will begin next month, the developer has confirmed.

Bellway has been granted planning permission for 80 flats and 39 houses on a site next to Laymoor Avenue and King’s Inch Road.

Work is scheduled to begin in May and will take approximately two years, with the estate’s completion expected in 2025.

A combination of detached, semi-detached and terraced homes are planned for the brownfield location, while 32 of the flats will be affordable in nature.

The site is bordered by a residential development to the north-west, Howden factory to the south and Braehead Shopping Centre car parks to the north-east, east and south-east.

The application was given the green light by councillors, subject to a section 75 agreement, in November.

A notification of consent was sent to the architects by Alasdair Morrison, Renfrewshire Council’s head of economy and development, last week.

The developer issued a statement on Wednesday, which said: “Bellway is looking forward to starting construction work in Renfrew in May, which will deliver 119 new homes to the area, comprising of 18 four-bedroom, nine three-bedroom and twelve two-bedroom houses and 76 two-bedroom flats and four one-bedroom flats.

“Of the 80 flatted properties, 32 flats will be brought to the market with a 15% discount to market value in line with Renfrewshire Council’s requirements for the provision of affordable housing.

“This development will complement our ongoing development on King’s Inch Road, Braehead, which comprises of 136 family homes and 112 flatted dwellings.”

The council’s planning department previously confirmed it had received eight representations which objected to the development.

Concerns had been raised about additional traffic as a result, potential pressure on education and medical facilities and building works causing disturbance in the area.

Conditions were attached to the decision, which ranged from some around visual and residential amenity to others around traffic and pedestrian safety.
