A DRIVER crashed into traffic cones and a metal barrier after overtaking someone on the M8 motorway in Glasgow.

Curtis Smith appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week after previously admitting to driving without due care and attention and at excessive speed on the morning of January 10, 2023.

The 26-year-old was driving his Ford Fiesta in lane two of the M8, meanwhile, the witness was driving in lane one at around 7.54am.

As Smith approached junction 23, Dumbreck, where he was planning on exiting, he proceeded to overtake the witness and failed to move into lane one in a suitable manner.

He collided with traffic cones, causing them to be launched into the air and land in lane one.

Smith’s car continued forward before colliding with the metal barriers between the carriageway and the exit slip.

This caused extensive damage to his car.

The Fiesta stopped in lane one. Cops attended and Smith was cautioned and charged and made no reply.

At the sentencing hearing, Smith’s lawyer said: “The exit from the motorway was partially closed off by cones.

“He tried to exit and the witness was coming up fast. He avoided any collision with the witness by taking the brunt by driving his vehicle towards the hatched area.

“I would ask you to dispose of the case in a way not to exclude him from being able to drive. He does a lot of mileage each year. His family would suffer if he was to be disqualified.

“He took the brunt for very unselfish reasons to avoid a collision.”

Smith, from Bishopbriggs, offered to pay £100 per week towards a fine.

Sheriff Patricia Pryce told him: “I’m well within my rights to disqualify you however I've heard what’s been said on your behalf. I will impose five points.”

He was fined £640.

The sheriff added: “You have to drive exceptionally carefully until such times your licence clears up.”
