Tributes have been paid to a former Labour councillor in Glasgow, who has died.

The Glasgow Labour group announced that John Kane, who represented the Govan ward in the city for several years passed away, aged 75.

 

It said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our comrade and former colleague, councillor John Kane has passed away.

“John was a strong champion for the people of Govan and deeply loved the role of councillor.

“Many across the Govan ward will have fond memories of John and all the work he has done for the community.

“Our thoughts are with John’s friends, family and all those who knew and loved him.”

Mr Kane won his seat in a by-election in 2013 after the death of former SNP group leader Allison Hunter.

He remained a councillor in the area until 2022.

Anas Sarwar, Scottish Labour leader, said he was “Very sad to learn of the death of former Labour councillor John Kane”.

He said: “John was a warm and committed man, who was dedicated to improving the lives of Glaswegians. He will be sorely missed.”

Labour councillor, Patricia Ferguson, said it was “Really sad news”.

She said: “John was a good man and a good friend.”

Dan Hutchison, Green councillor for Govan,said: “Awful to hear of John's passing - political differences aside - he was greatly appreciated and respected across our community and his passing is a great loss.”
