Celtic supporters group The Green Brigade are planning a foodbank collection to help some of the city's poorest families in the run up to Christmas.

The organisation are holding their four consecutive food drive before the Parkhead club take on Inverness Caledonian on Sunday, November 5 at Celtic Park.

In a post on Facebook, the group stated, "For the first two years, we were able to support many families in Glasgow's East End.

"As the success of the food bank collection increased, it became apparent that due to the generosity of the Celtic support, we could actually send food all across the city.

"Subsequently, last year we were delighted to invite various food banks from all corners of Glasgow to bring a van and take crates of food back to their bases and feed those who needed it most as Christmas approached."

The post added: "This year, we will once again be hoping to help feed families from all over the city and will have various vans around Celtic Park from around 12 noon right up until kick off at 3pm collecting food.

"We also collected cash donations from those who preferred to donate in this way and will once again have buckets at each collection point."

The food drives were originally organised to honour the legacy of the club's founder Brother Walfrid.

The Green Brigade also hope to help out the club's official charity the Celtic FC Foundation.

Their Christmas Appeal has previously benefited many charities across the city including Glasgow East Women's Aid, and some of the money raised will be donated to them.

In addition, money will be donated to the Scottish Action for Refugees who run a winter initiative programme which provides much needed aid within refugee camps in northern Greece.

The money Celtic supporters donate will help fund the shipping containers needed to transport aid to those suffering most.

The Green Brigade said: "We look forward to once again honouring Brother Walfrid's spirit by coming together and helping feed the poor and hungry in Scotland."
