Malaysian toasties and dessert toasties are among the exotic dishes planned as part of what is billed as Scotland's first cheese toastie festival in Glasgow in October.

Thousands of people have already registered an interest in attending the event which will offer gourmet variations on the humble after-hours snack, leaving the organisers overwhelmed.

Briony Cullen, community manager for Yelp! Glasgow said 3000 people had RSVPd to a Facebook invite, but a maximum of 600 were likely to be able to be accommodated across three sessions at the city's Drygate brewery and pub on October 9th.

Up to 15 restaurants and street food businesses from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen are expected to take part, with Glasgow's Ocho promising a sweet cheese toastie made with Nutella and mascarpone cheese between slices of brioche bread. Julie's Street Kitchen will also be taking part, with more to be announced.

Ms Cullen said the event had been inspired by a "pizza battle" she had organised, but this was the first festival of its type. "There will be someone doing more straightforward toastie options, with vegan and gluten free options too," she said.

However she requests for a more conventional toastie might depend on demand while the event seems set to disappoint those who expect a bit of Marmite in their cheese toastie. "That's very controversial because I'm Australian, I'm all about the Vegemite," she said.

If the event is a success, it is likely to lead to more festivals exploring the glamorous side of traditional foods, Ms Cullen added: "I think we should do doughnuts next."

At one stage hundreds of people a minute were registering an interest in the event on Facebook. A spokeswoman for Drygate Brewery said some had been contacting the pub direct. "We are just hosting it, but it has been getting quite a response already," she said.
