FAMILIES flocked to Castlemilk Community Centre to commemorate the anniversary of the Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The afternoon of sport and cultural activities offered young people the chance to try their hand at a range of Commonwealth Games sports, including javelin, shot-put and long jump.

And they were also given the chance to explore the world of science thanks to action-packed Glasgow Science Centre workshops.

Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life, said: “Two years ago, Glasgow delivered the best ever Commonwealth Games and we were determined to use the legacy of the Games to inspire the youngest Glaswegians to become more active in their communities.

“Today, the positive effects of the Games and the cultural programmes they helped to create continue to enhance communities across the city.”

He continued: “Legacy initiatives such as this great family fun day in Castlemilk not only encourage children to be more active, but also enable residents to come together and get to know each other, all of which adds to the fantastic sense of community spirit Glasgow prides itself on.”

Ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s baton reached 70 Commonwealth nations and territories, taking in a visit to Castlemilk Community Centre along the way.

Hundreds of local residents lined the streets to see the baton pass through Castlemilk in the early hours of the morning.
