The driver of a 17-tonne truck had a lucky escape after a concrete ramp collapsed in Glasgow city centre.

Sources at the scene said the incident happened when a Viridor lorry was trying to manoeuvre in Virginia Street at 7:30am this morning.

The driver was able to clamber out of the cab before the Fire and Rescue service arrived.

Glasgow Times:

A source from the emergency services, who asked not to be named, said: 'He picked up a skip and reversed into the car park to try to turn. The ramp has then collapsed. The driver is fine, thankfully.'

The source said the truck weighs 'at least 17 tonnes' and has a skip full on pallets on the back.

A local businessman who watched the drama unfold said: 'The ramp just caved. Another truck tried to tug it out but it didn't really work and another big chunk collapsed. It's totally beached.'

Glasgow Times:

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were sent but a crane will have to be used to remove it.

A spokeswoman said: 'They are trying to help but unfortunately they can't do very much because our appliances don't have the equipment to pull something like that out. The rear wheels are stuck in a void in the ramp and they are waiting on a crane to get it out.'

The driver of the truck and staff from his employer Viridor who were at the scene said: "A Viridor collection truck entered a car park in Virginia Street, Glasgow to collect a customer’s skip.  On exiting the car park, coming back up to street level, the ramp gave way with the back wheels of the vehicle going through the ramp.

"No one was injured in the incident and the vehicle is in the process of being recovered and will be assessed when back at the garage.

"Viridor’s UK compliance team will undertake a review of the incident."
